Overview
How should Banarasi silk be cared for? Treat pure silk as a natural protein fibre that responds poorly to harsh handling, high heat, and prolonged strong light. When in doubt — especially with zari, heavy ornament, or unknown dye behaviour — choose a professional dry cleaner experienced with silk.
Cleaning (SMOI)
- Initial washes: For the first three washes, dry cleaning is advisable to help preserve fabric integrity and colour vibrancy.
- If washing in water: Use lukewarm water with a good neutral soap. Avoid excessive squeezing or wringing; lightly squeeze to remove excess water.
- Stains: Do not wash stains with water at home as a first resort; take the piece to a professional dry cleaner who specialises in silk.
Drying (SMOI)
Always dry silk in the shade on a flat surface rather than hanging, to help prevent stretching or distortion.
Ironing (SMOI)
- Use low to medium heat.
- Iron on the reverse side.
- Never spray water directly onto silk to dampen before ironing — this can cause water spots. Use a slightly damp cloth to press over wrinkles if needed.
Storage & long-term preservation
SMOI’s silk-care page focuses on wash, dry, and iron. Conservators and silk retailers commonly advise breathable wrapping (e.g. clean cotton/muslin), avoidance of prolonged sealed plastic, protection from damp and insects, and occasional refolding so creases do not become permanent stress lines. Where we cannot cite a single SMOI line for every storage tip, we state the principle: clean, dry, shaded, breathable, and inspected periodically. Follow any care card supplied with your piece.
Travel
For travel, minimise crushing of heavily ornamented areas, keep the cloth dry, and avoid leaving silk in a hot parked car or damp suitcase for long periods. Specific packing methods vary by garment; when unsure, ask your cleaner or seller.
